Scheduled offline for 10 minutes or 24 hours?
Even if you're website is down for only 10 minutes, what if the Googlebot comes to crawl your site? What if its in the middle of indexing your web site when you need to take your site offline to upgrade the software or the database?Googlebots are unpredictable. Google crawlers perform random visits! How do you tell Google, Yahoo, your website visitors and websites linking to you that you are temporarily down and offline?... and that you will be back shortly. Depending on how you do it, Google could record all of your links with 404 - Not Found errors, or replace your indexed content with your incorrectly-coded system-down status page Who knows? You are wise not to take a chance and to do it right and it relatively easy to do! The documentation was hard to find... and here it is... straight foward and simple if you are a not a total newbie to .htaccess rewrite rules and a snippit of PHP code.
