Horse Racing Tips Blog
I run a horse racing website www.tipmaestro.co.uk and I am always being asked how can I make a living from betting on the horses or sometimes even how can I be a professional gambler on the horses. So I decided to write this to answer those questions as much as I can.
So you want to make some money and betting on the horses seems an easy way of doing it, thats your first mistake, if you want to make money from backing horses then be prepared for some late nights and lots of hard work, also you have probably heard of professional gamblers with bags stuffed full of fifty pound notes down on the course taking the bookies to the cleaners, well there is a bit of truth in that one but only if you know what you are doing, here are a few pointers to how it works.
Professional Gamblers
Most people that bet on the horses lose for the simple fact that they are too greedy, they are always looking for good odds and want to place just a little bit of cash to win lots and unless you are very lucky this is just not going to happen, the way professional gamblers make money from the bookies is to go with the odds on favourite and place a large bet and most of the time it will win, but ordinary people dont like doing this because they think but what if it loses and sometimes it most certainly will, so how do you get around this and make money like the pro punters?
Up to date form
First of all you need to scrutinise the horse racing form for a minimum of 3 years preferably longer, because then you can see the horses as they win their first maiden race and then gradually find the best distance for them and go for higher prize money until one day they are running in a listed race albeit at odds on and you dont just think that the horse is going to win but because you have followed it for the past years you know that this is exactly the race that its been building up to and you also know the other horses in the race so this is when the pro gambler makes his big bet, but even after all of this preperation he may still lose
The Draw
Some courses have what is called a draw bias this means that the winner usually comes either from the horse thats drawn high or the horse thats drawn low, depending on which course it is, Chester and Beverley are two of the most well known courses that have this sort of bias, it gives a distinct advantage so check to see if the race you are betting on has a draw advantage or not and take it into account when selecting your horse.
Irish Racing
Why is there a seperate bit for Irish racing I hear you say, well there is because unless you are very familiar with all of the Irish courses and trainers and jockeys then it is best to steer clear. Lots of times you can look through the form books and see who the trainer and jockey is and have a good idea who the winner should be and the bookmakers agree with you because they have made that horse the odds on favourite and then you find that an Irish horse with a trainer that you have never heard of and a jockey who has never ridden outside of Ireland before wins the race easily and the after race comments go along the lines of oh well yes the trainer only runs about three horses a year and gets a local lad to be the jockey but he has a good win rate at this particular track, so my advice is to keep away unless you happen to have some of this local knowledge.
Handicaps
A lot of people will tell you do not bet on handicaps and that is good advice but it also does not leave you with a lot to bet on because most of the race cards are full of handicaps. So what is a handicap? It is the same as in golf or any other sport, the better horses are penalised by adding weight to them in the form of weights put into specially designed pouches in the saddle, their is an official handicapper who watches each of the races to see how each horse performs and then gives it an official handicap for the next time it races. Most horses tend to race against others that are around the same handicap as they are but sometimes a horse will be put into a handicap against inferior horses and although it will be giving away a lot of weight it still has a good chance of winning because its a much better and faster horse to begin with, its just being artificially slowed down by the extra weight, What you should look out for is when you think that the handicapper has got it wrong, for instance you may have spotted that a horse that only finished fourth was going like a train but got blocked in and had nowhere to go so the handicapper has not peanalised it and you think next time it runs so long as it gets a clear run it must have a good chance.
One offs
Always look out for a trainer who only has one runner at a meeting especially if he haa booked a good jockey and even better if hes travelled a long way to get there, this is not always easy to find especially when there are a few meetings on the card because you have to look at the trainers and jockeys of hundreds of horses but when you do spot this make a note of it because the trainer has spent a lot of money getting the horse to the track and entering it and also top jockeys do not like riding a horse if it has no chance because they get paid a percentage of the winnings.
Bet Late
One thing that pro gamblers do is to leave it until the very last minute to place a big bet, partly because if they are putting up a lot of money it will alert everyone else that they think this horse will win and also because they need to see how the market is shaping, because they make a living from betting on horses they are realistic enough to realise that some people may have more information then they do especially if these other people are connected to the stables that the horse comes from, so they watch the betting very carefully to see if anything unexpected happens and if it does then they will normally not bet and save their money for another day, although you can normally get better odds by betting earlier you lose the advantage of being able to see how the market is performing.
So if after all this you still want to be a professional gambler on horse racing you now have an idea of what is involved but remember the only way to make sure that you do not lose is not to bet at all.
